District Recreational League
2009 DRL Rules.pdf
We have had several new inquiries regarding the cost, format and registration process for playing in the DRL. Here is some general information:
Why play in the DRL?
The Oregon Youth Soccer District Recreational League was designed to meet the needs of those recreational teams who have outgrown their current recreational league level of competition. If you are a coach who is unsure whether or not your team belongs in the DRL, ask yourself these questions:
- Does my team consistently beat their opponents and are the games so lopsided that they cease to be a challenge for my team?
- If this is a new team, does my team have athletes who may want a more competitive environment but, for whatever reason, do not want to play in the OYSA Competitive League?
- Is my team good enough to play in the Competitive Leagues but my players and families cannot make the commitment.
If your team is not a viable candidate for the DRL, do you have individual players who would benefit from playing on a team in the DRL? Ask your club if they will be fielding a team in the DRL, if they are not, ask for their help in identifying a club that will sponsor a team. It should be noted that one of the reasons that players, especially boys, quit soccer, is because they are bored and need a more stimulating and challenging focus. We believe that the OYSA League will address the needs of these types of teams and players.
All other youth sports in the United States have a tier system and this approach to soccer is not new. Countries around the world have used this approach that allows teams and players to play at a level best suited to their skills and needs.
It is important that teams who wish to compete in the OYSA communicate their intentions to their club. It is equally important that teams do not enter their club’s recreational league and then shift gears and enter the OYSA League. This places an unfair burden on the recreational league scheduler.
Every game is recreational and every game is competitive on some level. We are committed to serve the needs of all our athletes.
